Group Focus

Building Active Learners

Tots on the Rock established Learning Group to support tamariki in their transition to school. Our goal is the development of key skills, dispositions, and knowledge that will be needed in the next part of their learning journey.

Learning Group offers small groups of 6 children the opportunity to focus on project and inquiry based learning. Learning Group is held daily for approx. 30- 40 minutes and for children aged 4 or at that stage of learning. During this time we encourage sustained focus, research and discovery, social and emotional competency, decision making, and of course early literacy and numeracy skills. We also effectively weave the New Zealand Curriculum throughout our learning. Read more about Weaving a School Ready Curriculum Below

Building Knowledge

Teachers work with Learning Group tamariki to extend skills such as literacy, numeracy, problem-solving and active enquiry, group cooperation, social competence, personal responsibility and independence. We do not focus on ‘academic’ work, as that will come naturally at school, instead, our focus is to explore child-initiated activities and for tamariki to persist with longer-term projects. Some examples of our recent research inquiries are: Hāngarua-Reduce, Reuse and Recycle; Te Whānau a Tamanuitera- The Solar System; Deconstruction- Using tools; and Te Moana- The Ocean

Weaving a School ready Curriculum

Our skilled teaching team carefully weave projects and activities that align not only to our Early Childhood curriculum (Te Whāriki) but the New Zealand Curriculum which is used in the Primary years. Being able to participate and feel comfortable in a classroom setting is crucial to successful learning for tamariki. Learning Group aims to develop associated learning dispositions that provides tamariki with the skills required to participate in a classroom environment and to enjoy a smooth transition from a play- based learning centre to a more individual focussed learning setting such as a classroom. Our Learning group time provides far too many positive learning outcomes to list, however a special focus is placed on the following key competencies to support tamariki in their future learning.

Managing Self
